Executive Director of The Broadway League, Charlotte St. Martin, is enthusiastically in support of President Obama's new initiative to significantly increase travel and tourism in the United States. "In the 2008-2009 season, while 48% of the theatregoers were domestic tourists and 14% of the Broadway theatregoers were international tourists, the spending for international tourists represents 41% of the total spending by all visitors to New York City. The economic impact of Broadway to NYC was $ 9.8 billion for the 2008-2009 season, and the international visitor's impact represents $2.1 billion of the total 9.8 billion. As their length of stay is twice as long as the domestic tourist to the city, their economic impact to NYC far exceeds that of any other theatregoer or tourist to NYC. Broadway entertains over 25 million theatergoers annually in the U.S.A., and there is no doubt that the international visitors are an important part of those numbers. Broadway creates an economic impact to our country of over $13.15 billion which enables us to contribute to the quality of life for Americans in every way, including the opportunity to supplement arts education for our children. Broadway shows entertain and inspire audiences, while expanding our minds and our souls culturally and intellectually."
