Dear League Member,

Broadway proved yet again this season the vital role it plays in the artistic and economic livelihood of New York and on the Road. Grosses and attendances were up in a measurable amount! New York City grosses reached $1.27 billion, making 2013-14 our highest grossing season ever; and this represented 12.21 million admissions, up 5.6% from the previous season. League shows across North America demonstrated impressive growth as well, grossing $930.8 million, which represented 13.8 million admissions. Congratulations to the entire Broadway community in New York and on the Road for this highly successful season!

With your support and participation, The League continued to promote Broadway in New York and across the country. And what better example of the incredible growth within our industry than the 25th Annual Spring Road Conference this past May? A record-breaking 725 attendees came together to celebrate our history and accomplishments, examine current challenges, and build towards the future of Broadway and the Road. Our digital offerings reflected the changing landscape as well, with the inaugural "Digital War Room" and a dedicated conference mobile app. We are looking forward to building upon the momentum generated at the Spring Road Conference at our upcoming Biennial Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, this February.

This season, The League endeavored to further develop our programs and services through an exciting array of events and initiatives, such as:

  • National Kids' Night on Broadway® and ¡Viva! Broadway related projects.
  • The sixth year of the successful iTunes Broadway program, which raises product awareness nationally through free song downloads.
  • The ongoing, semi-annual Broadway Week promotion - now a staple New York event, with ticket sales surpassing 155,000 in the 2013-2014 season.
  • Stars in the Alley® , our free outdoor concert presented by United Airlines, which generated fan engagement and media exposure for new, ongoing, and upcoming shows.
  • Co-presenting the Tony Awards®, which extends Broadway's reach and received a record seven Emmy nominations for the 2013 telecast.

As always, we work to provide members with useful information resources. New editions of The Demographics of the Broadway Audience andBroadway's Economic Contribution to New York City, both profiling the 2012-13 season, were published this year. And on the digital front, the Broadway.org mobile site and apps (iOS and Android) were upgraded to include information on touring venues and productions with final plans being developed now for an extensive International touring schedule on the website. To accompany these changes, we have also added Korean and Chinese to the website, making Broadway's information now available in eight languages. Additionally, the League continues planning and development for the new industry/member website at BroadwayLeague.com, which is targeted for launch in the upcoming year.

In our efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the industry's internal workforce and offices, The League has spearheaded important programs this season, such as regular "think-tank" Summits and a two-day Diversity Training Workshop. We also continued cultivating the next generation of theatre professionals though the successful second year of the League/ATPAM Diversity Initiative, where college students shadow touring company managers to learn about non-performance careers in commercial theatre.

For several years our Government Relations initiatives have been front and center to what we do at The League. 2014 has been an especially productive year for our Government Relations Committee and Legislative Council, highlighted by many successes such as advocating forState and Federal tax incentives for investing in live theatre and defeating legislation that would have benefited unauthorized ticket resellers. Together, we have collaborated with the membership to advance The League's national agenda as well as assist your own local efforts, including this spring's Broadway Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. The League also provides Road Lobbying Toolkits as well as a quarterly Government Relations Newsletter - the most recent edition is enclosed for your review.

As a member, you and your staff are encouraged to take advantage of The League's broad range of programs such as networking and professional development opportunities, conferences, forums, and mentor pairings, along with other special events. Ongoing programs include Kids' Night on Broadway® ; Road Forums; the League/ATPAM Diversity Initiative; National and New York Education Grants; and travel discounts, to name only a few.

Once again, this year's renewal includes an opportunity to make a voluntary contribution to our educational foundation. Your contribution would support our efforts to introduce more families to Broadway and Touring Broadway through the Family First Nights® program and would also help fund other core programs such as the Broadway Speakers Bureau®, our national career development program. Many of our members continue to express the desire to receive communications and materials electronically. To better accommodate your needs, please indicate your preference by checking the appropriate box on your renewal form. Throughout the year, you will find many other opportunities to select electronic communication instead of printed materials. This will help us all become more "green" in a way that works best for you!

Completed renewal forms with payment are due no later than October 1, 2014 to ensure that your membership is in good standing.
