About the League
Apprenticeships

The Broadway League supports a year-long apprenticeship program with positions available beginning in mid-September through early August. All apprenticeships are part-time with approximately 24 hours per week in the office; the League does not offer remote or hybrid apprenticeships. Set weekly schedule within business hours will be mutually agreed upon prior to the start date with the department supervisor. Apprentices are paid on an hourly basis.

Apprenticeships at The Broadway League are designed for early career professionals or those changing careers to help them gain valuable experience by working closely with League staff members and, when possible, attending meetings, professional development seminars, networking events, and conferences.

Eligibility & Qualifications

To apply, candidates must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be able to commute to the Broadway League’s Times Square office a minimum of 3 days per week
  • Commit to working approximately 24 hours per week, in-person, for the full apprenticeship period (September through August)
  • Be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Previous internship or significant academic experience related to the position for which they are applying
  • A demonstrated interest in the administrative and/or business sides of the theatre industry
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced office environment
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to assist with organizing and planning various meetings and events
  • Experience performing administrative tasks in an office environment.

Available Apprenticeship Positions

Digital Content

The Digital Department manages the League’s website projects and online initiatives. The Digital Content Apprentice will assist with daily department functions in addition to covering League programs and events such as Broadway Bridges, Broadway Celebrates Juneteenth, and the Jimmy Awards depending on the season. Ideal candidates will have previous experience in digital content creation, social media management, graphic design, copywriting, and/or video editing (Adobe Premiere).

Duties may include:

  • Researching and writing posts for social media
  • Assisting with website content and analytics
  • Pitching content ideas for Broadway League-owned accounts
  • Assisting with content capture at League events
  • Copyediting and proofreading
  • Assisting with video and photo editing
  • Supporting the management and maintenance of photo and video archives
  • Maintaining tracking spreadsheets and other administrative tasks

Education and Engagement

The Audience Engagement Department creates and supports Broadway industry education and community engagement programs designed to ensure an audience for live theatre in the future. Apprentices work closely with all members of the department to execute programs and initiatives such as the Jimmy Awards, Broadway Bridges, Broadway Career Exploration Day, Broadway Speakers Bureau, and the annual Education & Engagement Forum. Ideal candidates will have previous experience in arts administration, community outreach, and/or educational programming.

Duties may include:

  • Coordinating meetings and drafting meeting minutes
  • Managing and maintaining internal databases
  • Creating, updating, and organizing materials for programs, events, and meetings
  • Drafting email correspondence with key stakeholders
  • Assisting with event management during in-person programming
  • Confirming group ticket orders and processing related invoices
  • Conducting research as needed
  • Supporting organization-wide meetings and events as needed

Research

The Research Department is the official hub for all statistical and historical information for Broadway and Touring Broadway. The Research Apprentice will support the department’s work managing the Internet Broadway Database (IBDB.com), administering in-theatre and electronic surveys, producing reports on the demographics of the audience and the economic impact of the industry, compiling gross and attendance data, and producing season statistics. Ideal candidates will have experience in data entry, working with spreadsheets and databases, copy editing, organizing archival materials, and dealing with sensitive information.

Duties may include:

  • Monitoring changes in personnel for productions in NYC and on the Road
  • Creating and editing records in IBDB.com
  • Tracking touring engagements and updating broadway.org
  • Assembling survey materials
  • Maintaining spreadsheets
  • Organizing department resources
  • Reviewing weekly gross and attendance reports
  • Proofreading research reports

    • Digital Content – a portfolio that includes at least 3 work samples of digital content (social media, video, photo, website, etc.) you have created
    • Education & Engagement – 2 writing samples (professional or academic) no more than 5 pages in length
    • Research – a writing sample (professional or academic) no more than 5 pages in length demonstrating your ability to synthesize and communicate information

Yes, apprentices are paid $19.00 per hour. Course credit is also available for those interested. Unpaid vacation and time off is available with supervisor approval.

What is the selection process for Broadway League apprenticeships?

  1. Submit application and any supplemental materials required for the specific apprenticeship for which you are applying.
  2. Select candidates will be invited to participate in a preliminary interview with the apprenticeship program coordinator.
  3. No more than three candidates per apprenticeship will be invited to participate in a final in-person interview with the department supervisor(s) for the specific position for which they are applying.

If I am not selected for an apprenticeship with The Broadway League, may I apply again in the future?

Yes, you may apply again.

What is the duration of a Broadway League apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships at The Broadway League begin in early September and end in late July/early August (exact start and end dates will be determined upon offer of the apprenticeship). Program participants must commit to the full apprenticeship term.
