The Broadway League’s 14th annual High School Broadway Shadowing Program successfully concluded this season as 25 students from New York City public high schools participated in this unique behind-the-scenes career development experience. The program connects students with Broadway professionals, providing an insider’s view of the day-to-day operations of a Broadway show and introducing them to a variety of non-performance careers in the arts.
Over five days (March 9-13), the selected group of students shadowed Broadway professionals in roles beyond the stage. As the only commercial theatre program of its kind, individual students with aspirations of exploring non-performance careers in the arts were paired with Broadway General Management offices, offering a comprehensive look at the many components of producing a show. Participants visited the Museum of Broadway and The Shubert Archive, joined marketing and management meetings, had a private tour of The Shubert Theatre hosted by the Shubert Organization, attended tech rehearsals, observed a new show load-in, and met with stage managers and other professionals working on each production. General Management offices participating in the program include: Alchemation, Bespoke Theatricals, Disney Theatrical Group, Foresight Theatrical, Lincoln Center Theater, RCI Theatricals, ShowTown Theatricals, and TT Partners.
“The High School Broadway Shadowing Program reflects the simple truth that Broadway is comprised of far more than what audiences see on stage,” said Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League. “By welcoming students behind the scenes, they are being introduced to the many career pathways that make Broadway run. We’re grateful to the participating shows and our partners at the NYC Public Schools Arts Office for joining to ensure the industry continues to evolve and grow to new heights.”
This year, students were partnered with 14 Broadway productions, including:
Aladdin
& Juliet
Buena Vista Social Club
Hadestown
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Maybe Happy Ending
MJ
Oh, Mary!
Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical
Ragtime
Stranger Things: The First Shadow
The Book of Mormon
The Lion King
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)
The March program is the culmination of a two-part initiative. On January 8, 2026, 102 students attended the Broadway Career Exploration Day at Theatre Row. This one-day panel event allowed high school students to hear about non-performance careers from members of The Outsiders team prior to attending a performance of the show that evening. From these students, 25 were selected to move on to the five-day program.
The High School Broadway Shadowing Program is a joint program of The Broadway League and the NYC Public Schools Arts Office.
